Sinless Ma and Sinful Men

Honor Our (Blessed) Mother
We Catholics are a people who celebrate life! On Christmas we rejoice at the birth of the Christ-child and, in the middle of Advent, we celebrate the day that His Mother was conceived. These great solemnities of the Church remind us of our debt to all mothers who choose life and our respect and love for the nascent life in a woman’s womb. After all, if unto us the Son of God were not born, or if His sinless Mother were not conceived, would we ever have tasted salvation or hoped to receive eternal life?
Let us then celebrate as a Church family the day when life began for our Blessed Mother, Her Immaculate Conception. The Vigil Mass will be at 4:30PM on December 7. The Masses for December 8 will be at 5:15PM at Saint Mary’s and at 6:30PM at Saint Andrew’s.
Repent this Advent
The Gospel tells us that “John the Baptist appeared, preaching…and saying, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’” (Mt. 3:1-2) These words of the Baptist were not meant just for the people of his time; they are meant also for us who await the coming of the Lord. We too are called to acknowledge our sins, for the Christ-child asks of us but one gift for His birthday: our humble and contrite hearts.
This Advent season, I invite any heart made heavy by sin and regret to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Aside from the regular schedule of confessions of Saint Andrew’s on Saturdays at 3:30PM, our parish will also have an Advent Penance Service on December 15 at 7:00PM. Our former pastor, Fr. Danny Schwendeman, will return to help me with hearing confessions.
If you cannot make it to our service, please consider attending the communal Penance Services of our other local Catholic churches: Saints Peter and Paul in Danville will have theirs on December 14 at 7:00PM; Saint Leo in Versailles will offer confessions on December 16 at 7:00PM; and Saint Lawrence in Lawrenceburg has their service scheduled for December 21 at 6:30PM.
I firmly believe in the power of this Sacrament and the grace it gives to those who approach it with sincere hearts. For this reason, I offer to all the opportunity for Reconciliation on the two evenings before Christmas eve. On December 22 and 23, I will be in the confessional of Saint Andrew’s from 5:00PM to 7:00PM for anyone who wishes to come for confession.
